Deco back, Danny doubt for Portugal

Portugal striker Danny is set to miss the World Cup last 16 match against Spain with a badly bruised leg, but Deco returns after missing the 0-0 draw with Brazil, officials said on Saturday.

The Portuguese Football Federation said Venezuela-born Danny has bruising on his left leg and would have treatment.

Deco meanwhile trained as normal after missing the draw with his native Brazil which sent the Portuguese through to a last 16 match with Spain on Tuesday.

Portugal put the Spanish out of Euro 2004 but since then the Spanish have ended a four-decade trophy drought by winning Euro 2008 and have only lost two of their last 50 matches.

On Friday they beat Chile to win their group and coach Vicente Del Boqsue believes that the opening day loss to Switzerland…

International Friendly: United States 2 Mexico 2

Mexico have overturned a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against the United States in an international friendly in Arizona on Wednesday.

First-half goals from Michael Bradley and Chris Wondolowski had the USA on course for a routine victory at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

But Miguel Herrera s half-time team talk spurred Mexico into action as the visitors ensured honours were even courtesy of Rafael Marquez and Alan Pulido.

Despite avoiding defeat, Mexico remain winless in their past five encounters against Jurgen Klinsmann s USA team, with their last triumph a 4-2 victory in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The contest, which consisted of predominately locally based players, was a tentative affair in the opening minutes.

Fans in attendance were finally…

Erik ten Hag: Manchester United have a defensive puzzle to solve against City

Erik ten Hag admits he must solve a defensive “puzzle” for Sunday’s Manchester derby.

Harry Maguire has joined Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia and Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the sidelines through injury and Manchester United boss Ten Hag is expected to pick from the same squad that edged past Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup in midweek.

Sofyan Amrabat returned to the United side on Wednesday on the left, with Diogo Dalot on the right.

“So we have to be creative but I think we can. On Wednesday, we show…

Dinamo Zagreb v Bayern Munich: Ribery calls for Gladbach response

Franck Ribery has stressed the importance of not dwelling on the surprise 3-1 defeat at Borussia Monchengladbach as Bayern Munich look to finish their Champions League group-stage campaign with a flourish against Dinamo Zagreb.

There is little to play for in Wednesday s Group F clash at the Stadion Maksimir with Bundesliga champions Bayern guaranteed top spot, while Dinamo are consigned to a fourth-placed finish and elimination from Europe for this season.

However, Bayern will be keen to make an impression after finding themselves in the unfamiliar position of having to bounce back from defeat following an abject showing at Borussia Park on Saturday.

It was the first time Bayern had been beaten in the league before the mid-season break since the 2012-13 campaign…

Simeone not ready for Atletico to give up Champions League dream after Madrid mauling

Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone refused to give up on his side s Champions League hopes despite a crushing 3-0 defeat in the first leg of their semi-final tie with city rivals Real Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo thrilled the Santiago Bernabeu with another hat-trick to follow the treble that downed Bayern Munich in the previous round.

It means next week s second leg, a match that will be the last European match played at Atletico s Vicente Calderon, should be a formality for Zinedine Zidane s men.

However, despite the weighty deficit leaving Atletico staring at heartache to go with the 2014 and 2016 final defeats to Madrid – their neighbours also prevailed in a 2015 quarter-final – Simeone retained a steely determination in the face of his team s famed def…

Conte admits Tottenham ´need to improve a lot´ after Man Utd defeat

Antonio Conte acknowledged Tottenham must do better in big games after they were beaten 2-0 at Manchester United.

Goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes condemned Conte s side to only their second Premier League defeat of the season, having also been beaten 3-1 at leaders Arsenal earlier this month.

Spurs have made an otherwise impressive start to the campaign and still sit third in the table, level on points with second-placed Manchester City and three ahead of Chelsea in fourth, albeit having played a game more than both.

However, speaking to Amazon Prime, Conte pointed to the difference in spending power between his club and United, who forked out more than anyone in England in the last transfer window to bring in the likes of Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Anto…

Aquilani is welcome at Anfield: Dalglish

Italian international midfielder Alberto Aquilani is welcome back at Anfield, according to Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish.

The Italian international has spent the season on loan in the Serie A with Juventus, who are keen to make the move permanent.

But Juve have refused to pay the 14 million pound transfer fee for the 26-year-old that they negotiated with the Reds last August.

When people talk about next season, I’m surprised they don’t give Alberto a mention, Dalglish told the Liverpool Echo.

Everyone seems to have forgotten about him.

“I know he has done really well at Juventus this season.

When the loan finishes at the end of the season, he reverts back to being a Liverpool player.

Nothing is cast in stone and he…

Queiroz signs new Iran contract

Carlos Queiroz put an end to speculation surrounding his future by signing a new four-deal to remain coach of Iran.

Queiroz stated his intention to step down as coach at the end of the World Cup in Brazil and he was linked with a move to Leeds United, but the Portuguese boss has decided to continue in his role.

While the contract is through to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Queiroz will be assessed on Iran s performances at AFC Asian Cup in January before the Iran Football Federation (IFF) decide whether or not to stick with the 61-year-old.

This contract is in 3 stages, first the Asian Cup, said IFF president Ali Kafashian.

We shall analyse the results before deciding to continue with Queiroz or not.

Second, the qualification to the FIFA World …
