Man Utd´s 6-2 ´Clasico´ win over Leeds not best performance of season, says Fred

Fred does not believe Manchester United were even at their best in December s remarkable 6-2 thrashing of Leeds United as he fired a warning ahead of a rematch of what he calls an English football Clasico .

United and Leeds were once party to one of the fiercest rivalries in British football, but it took a backseat to the Red Devils other major matches after the Yorkshire club were relegated from the Premier League in 2004.

The December meeting at Old Trafford was their first in the league for over 16 years, but for Leeds it swiftly turned into a nightmare as Scott McTominay became the first player in Premier League history to score twice in the first three minutes of a match.

That was just the tip of the iceberg, however, as Leeds went on to concede four goals …

Brendan Rodgers seeks answers and says Celtic ‘have to be so much better’

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers will focus on finding answers from within during a crucial run of games after fans turned on the board during a 2-0 defeat by Hearts.

The home support did not take their first domestic defeat at Celtic Park since January 2021 well with cries of “sack the board” ringing out across Celtic Park after supporters in the main stand vented their frustration towards directors.

Celtic did not really look like mounting a comeback after Lawrence Shankland’s header and Stephen Kingsley’s free-kick put Hearts two ahead inside half an hour.

Only one of the club’s eight summer signings featured in the game and skipper Callum McGregor later stressed that Celtic need to sign quality players in January.

Daniel Levy would consider Tottenham sale if it was in best interests of club

Daniel Levy has revealed for the first time he would be “open” to selling his stake in Tottenham if it was right for the club.

Levy has been Spurs chairman since 2001 and runs affairs for majority shareholder ENIC, which owns 86.58 per cent of the club while the other 13.42 per cent of shares are held by around 30,000 individuals.

The first half of 2023 proved tumultuous for Tottenham and as a result Levy faced several calls from supporters to leave his position, but the mood in N17 has been transformed following the June appointment of head coach Ange Postecoglou.

Positivity is growing on the pitch but unrest off it remains bubbling under the surface with fans protesting before last month’s win over Manchester United due to the club’s decision to increas…

Sunderland 2-2 Leeds: Meslier howler gifts Black Cats a point

Illan Meslier s bizzare error gifted Sunderland a last-gasp 2-2 draw against Leeds at the Stadium of Light on Friday.

The home supporters were sent into raptures by one of their own in the ninth minute when Chris Rigg opened the scoring, tucking home from close range after Meslier had produced a miraculous save to deny Dennis Cirkin s previous effort.

But Sunderland s joy was short-lived when Joel Piroe headed Wilfried Gnonto s inviting delivery beyond Anthony Patterson, though replays showed he may have wandered into an offside position.

Both sides continued to push for a half-time lead, with Brenden Aaronson seeing his shot cleared off the line while Patrick Roberts effort was saved to bring a pulsating half of action to a close.

The hosts emerged from…

Former Argentina head coach Basile says ´messy´ PSG not using Messi correctly

Former Argentina head coach Alfio Basile has criticised messy  Paris Saint-Germain s use of Lionel Messi and says the Ligue 1 side have a weak defence .

Barcelona s financial difficulties forced Messi to find a new club, eventually joining PSG on a free transfer in August.

The six-time Ballon d Or winner got off to a slow start in France, scoring just once in his first four appearances across all competitions and missing several games due to injury.

Basile, who had two spells in charge of Argentina (1991-1994 and 2006-2008), winning two Copa Americas and a FIFA Confederations Cup in a successful first stint, hit out at how PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino was deploying Messi.

The problem that Messi has is that at PSG, he is playing on the right and with…

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool: Reds take Premier League title bid to last day

Joel Matip ensured the Premier League title race will go to the final day as Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 at Southampton.

A Reds team showing nine changes from the weekend s FA Cup final over Chelsea found themselves down early through a fine Nathan Redmond strike.

However, Liverpool responded through a thunderous Takumi Minamino strike before the break and went on to secure the win in the second half as Matip headed home a corner in the 67th minute.

Victory moved Jurgen Klopp s men to just a point behind Manchester City at the summit, meaning the teams  respective final-day showdowns with Wolves and Aston Villa will decide the destination of the title.

A big three points on the road. We keep going

Ancelotti proud of Real Madrid suffering together in Barcelona triumph

Carlo Ancelotti hailed Real Madrid s togetherness and defensive work after Los Blancos defeated Barcelona 2-1 in Sunday s Clasico to return to the top of LaLiga.

David Alaba opened the scoring on his Clasico debut before Lucas Vazquez tapped in a second in stoppage time as Madrid seemed to be cruising to their fourth consecutive win over Barca in all competitions – their best run since 1965.

Sergio Aguero s pulled one back at Camp Nou but that was not enough as the hosts went winless in a fifth straight LaLiga Clasico, their longest run without a victory against any team in the competition since May 2008.

However, at times Madrid had to soak up significant pressure and Ancelotti was delighted with his side s resolute defending as Ronald Koeman became only t…

Real Salt Lake v Sporting Kansas City: Mastroeni lauds team effort of Western Conference leaders

Real Salt Lake head coach Pablo Mastroeni credited the collective effort of his league-leading side as they prepare to host Sporting Kansas City at America First Field for Sunday s MLS clash.

Salt Lake sit atop of the Western Conference table after a six-game undefeated streak, having overcome Philadelphia Union 2-1 in their last outing.

Alexandros Katranis provided a remarkable 89th-minute winner in that victory over the Union, with RSL not losing an MLS game since March 9 against Colorado Rapids.

I think it is everything so far, every aspect of the team has been competitive – sometimes the offense clicks, sometimes it is the defense, Mastroeni said.

For me, it is really the collective; from the staff, to the players, to me and the work we do every d…

Prediction: Panathinaikos vs Ajax

Best Odds: 2/3

Bookmaker:

In what could prove to be an enjoyable Europa League qualifying battle on Thursday night, Ajax will travel to the Olympic Stadium when they meet Panathinaikos.

Panathinaikos

Starting with the hosts, while Panathinaikos might have breezed their way to another European finish last season, some in Diego Alonso’s camp would have been disappointed by a missed opportunity. Nevertheless, despite signing off the 2023/24 campaign by collecting just a single point from any of their final four Super League appearances, the Greens should take plenty of positives away from an eye-catching summer flurry. Crowned Greek Cup champions for a 20th time back on May 25th as they secured a 1-0 win against Aris, the former Sevilla boss also saw his squad l…
